Goan jujubes is a spin-off of the Turkish delight and is one of the popular sweets specially during Christmas. In my early childhood I remember that in Goa we would exchange assorted sweet trays with family, friends and close neighbors on Christmas day. The whole day family, friends and neighbors would visit and exchange Christmas sweets. My mum made most of the sweets at home but I always remember her buying the jujubes from the store. So I am a little proud of myself to have made them at home for the first time. The recipe is fairly simple and makes for a very kid friendly Christmas sweet.
A typical Goan Christmas sweets tray could look like the image below. All sweets were made by hand and at home.

It has the following sweets neureos, kulkus, carambolas, bebinca, dodol, doce, marzipan made with cashews, plum cake, bolinhas, jujubes and a few more. You can click on each item and it will take you to that recipe
Serving Size : 3 cups of cut cubes about 1″
Ingredients:
3 packs of unflavored knox gelatine (50gms)
2 cups of sugar
2 pinches of salt
1.5 cup water
1/2 tsp of lemon/lime extract
1/2 cup of granulated sugar for coating
3 assorted food color – 10-12 drops each
Directions:
Have 3 separate 2 cup each tupperware containers ( square or rectangular shaped)
Line each with plastic wrap as it is easier to turn over and take the jujubes out with no mess.
To a pan add the water, gelatine, salt, sugar, lemon essence stir till no lumps and heat the mixture till it comes to a boil.
Pour a cup each in 3 separate bowls to add your preferred color.
Now pour the colored mixture in each individual tupperware.
Let stand at room temperature till fully set maybe overnight.
Next day take them out of the container and grease a knife and cut them in 1″ cubes.
Coat them well with granulated sugar and enjoy.

This looks amazing!

HEYA NANDHINI!
GOOD GRIEF! Them ‘JUJUBES’ take Me/Us back in time. If My memory serves Me right. they used to come in small transparent plastic bags, correct Me if I am wrong. The ‘JUJUBES’ used to give a lot of colour to the ‘PLATTER OF CHRISTMAS GOODIES’.I am ‘ABSOLUTELY GOBSMACKED’ that Eu managed to produce them indoors. KUDOS to Eu. And thanks for reminding Me/Us about this ‘JUJUBES’. I almost forgot about this ‘FABULOUS FOOD’. It is a bit too late to prepare ‘JUJUBES’ for Christmas 2016, but rest assured We will definitely make ‘JUJUBES’ for Christmas 2017. And finally,LET LOVE AND PEACE BECOME EVEN MORE PRONOUNCED DURING THIS ‘YULETIDE SEASON’. And may the ‘LOVE OF CHRIST,MARY AND SAINT JOSEPH BE WITH US. LET’S TRY TO INHERIT THEIR PEACE. To Eu and all in Your household have a ‘HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017.

Thank you for showing me your experience…I was inspired to make blox this morning…Using Knox the first time was mysterious. It takes 5 to 10 minutes of stirring the blob in hot water to dissolve the gelatin…Eventually, you may have to remove small flakes of dissolved gelatin from the mixture with a spoon. Soak it, then put hot water over it… You can use your finger to know if their is undissolved gelatin on the bottom of the bowl. Knox suggests 2 cups of liquid to 1 package of gelatin. But these Knox blox are not firm enough for me. There are old books at online bookstores that have more Knox gelatin recipes. Some of them use more gelatin than the 2:1 ratio. The most professional way to remove set gelatin from a mold is by submerging the mold in warm water for a couple of minutes. Here is a very attractive video, I used the search query ‘unmolding Knox gelatin’: https://youtu.be/9MrTuLgLPO4

Thank You so much Timothy for taking the time to explain the blob. It sure was a bit of a challenge. I figured next time I would not soak the gelatin but add it directly to all the liquid. Will definitely check the video. Hope you had a great Christmas 🙂 Happy New Years!

I had a great holiday. I hope your holiday was great. I just put a blog post about gelatin on my website. I have a couple more to post also. If you look at the pictures, you will see that I eliminated all the confusion that I experienced using gelatin since I was not excited when I used gelatin the first time. I want to make Norwegian cakes that use whipping cream modified with gelatin. To have a “melt in your mouth” experience! Pinterest has tons of gelatin, cream and pudding recipes. I did not know there were beaches in India until I saw your website 8)

Thanks Timothy, yes I did check the in-depth post 🙂 I am a bit scared to use gelatin since I haven’t cooked much with it. It takes me couple of tries before I can use basic science to play around with the ingredient.

Wow, good for you Nandini, you nailed it! Growing up in Kenya, we too exchanged trays of Goan sweets with neighbors and friends. It was always wonderful to add to your own home-made sweets. Gosh, it brought back such warm memories looking at that tray. I loved all of them, craving dodol right about now 🙂
